Chrome on the surface of the red plastic lid and the palm rest is what Toshiba calls the Red Matrix. The design is accentuated by a subtle checkerboard pattern. Even if all plastic is not as strong as a combination of brushed aluminum and plastic is the Asus-U56E BBL5 ($ 649.99 list, 4 stars), there is surprisingly little flexibility from the beginning. Size 1.5 9.1 13.3 inches (HWD), is also a bit 'lighter, weighing 4.47 pounds, compared to the Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK ($ 529.99 street, 3 stars), which weighs 5.15 pounds, even though their corresponding dimensions.
The Satellite L745D-S4220RD has a 14-inch widescreen and 1366 x 768 pixels (which can display video up to 720) is the norm for this size screen. It is also common in the value of laptops is the low quality of the entire speaker. As volume increases, diminishes the quality of sound, and my tests with a couple of songs mixed in Pandora left me wanting to use headphones.

Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220RD has a full keyboard. The keys are square, but it is not chiclet style that has become so popular. There are significant areas in the keys, which can be adjustable to some users. Regardless, the typing experience was quite nice. Less fun was a multitouch trackpad, which is covered with a light texture, to distinguish it from a palm smooth surface. Composition seemed to irritate Under My hand. The left and right buttons were responsive, but clicking a little 'too strong.
Features
There are only so many ways to reduce the price of a laptop, and all functions has been one of the main issues to be cut on this laptop. Basic connections, such as headsets and microphone are all present, with a high card reader (SD, MS / Pro). With three USB 2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI, an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi 802.11n, there's not much here that is not something we have not seen in competing systems. The optical drive, which offers playback of DVD dual-layer burning is similar to that found in the Acer Aspire AS5253-BZ480 ($ 499.99 list, 3.5 stars). The disk of 500 GB 5400 rpm is larger than the hard drive in Acer 320, but smaller than the 640 GB available on more expensive models like the Dell Inspiron and Asus 8073DBK i14RN4110-U56E-BBL5.
Toshiba L745D-S4220RD is light on features but heavy on bloatware pre-installed on the system. You get a 30 day trial of Norton Internet Security, a start-up version of Microsoft Office 2010, a collection of sample WildTangent games and two spoonfuls of programs and tools that bears the mark Toshiba. Although it is not uncommon to find a lot of bloatware on a laptop of this price category, you want to spend a little time to clean the system. Toshiba also covers the laptop with a standard 1 year warranty covering parts and labor, and an unexpected but welcome one year warranty on the battery too.
Performance
Toshiba L745D-S4220RD gives a lot of performance to achieve the low price, choose an AMD processor normally found in netbooks, dual-core 1.6 GHz processor Fusion E-350. Couple with 4 GB of RAM this netbook processor has a much lower quality, performance than the Intel Core i3 and i5 used in other phones. In PCMark 7, our general productivity test, scored 963 points Toshiba Satellite less than half the points scored by the Intel-based laptops such as Asus U56E-BBL5 (1920 points) and Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK (1931 points ). It even fell behind Acer Aspire 4743Z 4861 ($ 469.99 list, 3 stars), which also uses a laptop processor, and scored 1234 points.
The processor also was significantly slower than competing systems from Intel, Toshiba and Acer Aspire E-350 AS5253-equipped BZ661 ($ 469.99 list, 3.5 stars) got 0.61 points on our Cinebench R11. 5 minutes - the Asus U56E-BBL5 scored 2.60. It took 7 minutes 4 seconds to complete our video encoding test handbrake, and 18 minutes and 33 seconds to complete our Photoshop test CS5, Toshiba Satellite makes unsuitable for heavy multimedia editing.
The E-350 AMD Fusion is a fusion line AMD accelerated processing units (APU). As such, the involvement of the processor chip die with a AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics processor programmable. In 3DMark 2006 was the Toshiba Satellite 2394 points average retail and resolution settings, away from the 4840 points scored by the Asus-U56E BBL5. However, when tested with real games, satellite scored 16 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 12fps in Lost Planet 2, beating competitors to the laptops, but just below the playable. It may not be able to enjoy a game of Crysis on this laptop, but World of Warcraft is not out of question.
Another area where the satellite was in its own battery life. In our MobileMark 2007 battery benchmark Toshiba lasted 5 hours 2 minutes with a 6 cell battery 48Wh, settling somewhere between Acer Aspire AS5253-BZ480 (4:50 with a 6 cell battery 49Wh-) and Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK (5 : 24 with a 6 cell battery 44Wh-). All these fallen behind Asus U56E-BBL5 that leverage a much larger 8-cell battery 74Wh at 7:34 last.
Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220RD not be surprised with his performance, but its $ 500 price tag makes it worth your attention. Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK sells for only $ 20 more, and offers a Core i5 and all the best performance with it. Of course, if you can afford the extra $ 150, check out our selection Editors' U56E-BBL5 for Asus, who offers a lot more power and features.
