Acer Aspire 5830TG-6402 Review

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 ($ 799.99 direct) is a laptop that packs a punch one-two with good looks and solid performance, with a combination of processor and graphics that usually cost much more. It does this by making some sacrifices, which results in a set of limited functionality and low heat dissipation. But despite these shortcomings, the Acer Aspire 6402-5830TG TimelineX worth a visit.

Design

Acer has updated its popular series TimelineX in June, when the car is lighter profile, rugged design and bright colors. Our review unit 5830TG-6402 this family was a cool cobalt blue, covered with lid, aluminum and metal and plastic frame. This combination has led to a portable lightweight (5.4 pounds), there is little visible bending of the body or the keyboard. The body is thin, which is only 1.23 by 9.80 by 14.88 inches (HWD), which does not leave much room for heat dissipation. During the most demanding tests of reference, the temperature of the lower surface of the handset has reached 111 degrees Fahrenheit (as measured by the thermometer Fluke IR).

The palm rest is covered with plastic, but the keyboard and keypad are surrounded by bare brushed aluminum. The black Chiclet-style keys have a matte finish and smooth, and writing experience is pleasant. The only unusual feature of the keyboard is the Enter key, which is combined with the key. This does not seem to serve a functional purpose, but it provides visual feedback for keyboard of old. A multitouch touchpad is located just below the space bar, which is uncomfortable far to the left. But the touchpad is nice and responsive, and click buttons left and right are quiet and comfortable.

15.6-inch screen offers a resolution of 1366 x 768 and the common 'enough to watch video, 720p, widescreen and offers enough space to work with two windows or documents side by side. Acer pairs of this display above average Dolby Home Theater media.

Features

For a 15-inch laptop, the Acer Aspire is a fairly standard set of features, a VGA and HDMI-output, multi-format card reader (SD, xD, MMC, MS / Pro), and three USB 2.0 ports. One USB 3.0 offers data transfer speeds, and is also equipped to download to your phone or music player when the computer is off. The headphones on the left side of the laptop to double the S / PDIF port, which gives you a 5.1 source to connect digital audio home theater receiver or speaker system.

Wireless is also a lot of options, thanks to Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0, and Clear.fi, the Acer's multimedia streaming technology, which allows all Clear.fi Acer products to share and forward your home network with each other. All of these wireless options, however, left me wants WiMAX (4G broadband service), or Intel wireless display (Widi 2.0) was involved. Editors' Choice for Lenovo IdeaPad 1066A9U-V570 ($ 629.99 list, 4 stars), for example, offers both.

The Acer Aspire is equipped with a DVD ± RW for recording and playback optical media. A drive of 640 GB hard disk should provide enough space for your files, but if you need more space, USB 3.0 port to be used an external hard drive quite simple. At 5,400 rpm, the hard drive is slower than the speed of 7200 were found in the Dell XPS 15z ($ 1,534 direct, 4 stars).

In this unit, you will also find a lot of software, as a 60-day trial of McAfee Internet Security, a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security 2010 and Microsoft Office Starter. There are also some additional icons on the desktop, such as links to eBay and Netflix, a player for the New York Times, PC Rincon and toolbars both Bing and Google. Acer Aspire TimelineX is protected with one year warranty covering parts and labor, even for injuries that occur during international travel.

Performance

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 is equipped with a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor, which uses Intel CPU Sandy Bridge. This processor is supported with 6 GB of RAM, and performance of the notebook reflects the effectiveness of this combination. In PCMark 7, all of our benchmarking tests, the Acer Aspire 6402-5830TG scored a good 2252, surpassing Dell Inspiron i15RN5110-5816DBK ($ 799.99 list, 3 stars) (2169 points) and V570-1066A9U Lenovo IdeaPad (2066). In Cinebench R11.5, which serves as our test processor speed, Acer scored 2.60, just in line with Dell Inspiron (2.61) and Lenovo IdeaPad (2.60). He was knocked out of Asus K53E-B1 ($ 770 street, 4 stars), which has a slightly faster processor i5, and scored 2.74 and Dell XPS 15z (3.03), which has to a quad-core processor.

Processing power lent itself well to multimedia work, too. The Acer has wreaked havoc in our video encoding test with Handbrake only 1 minute 54 seconds, breaking the hearts of double and quadruple similar systems. The K53E-B1 Asus completed the race in 2:22, where the Core i7-equipped Dell XPS 15z run 2:17. For those who work with video these days show a fast and smooth. The story is somewhat different in our test of the Photoshop image manipulation, including Acer completed in 4 minutes and 10 seconds, which corresponds to the time of the Lenovo IdeaPad 1066A9U-V570, but dragging 15z Dell XPS (3: 40) and Asus K53E-B1 (3:51). The Acer is more than able to handle all your photo editing needs, but anyone familiar with quality systems professional may feel it is a little slow.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 also has an Nvidia GeForce 520M discrete graphics chip. But thanks to the automatic switching technology Optimus Nvidia, Acer uses the most efficient integrated graphics when high-octane graphics are not necessary. In 3DMark06 Acer Aspire 5792 marked the resolution settings on average, and 4804 points when pushed all the way to 768th by 1366 This performance surpasses easily integrated graphics solution used in Dell Inspiron i15RN5110-5816DBK (4145 on a medium resolution, 1882 native) and Lenovo IdeaPad (4414 using the native 4001), but is left in place against a system with a more powerful GPU, like the Dell XPS 15z (through 8909, 5541 for natives).

This capability also provides graphics performance of solid play, and Acer offers enough support for moderate 3D gaming. In Crysis, the Acer pumped respectable 32.5 frames per second (fps) at medium resolution, but the requirements of the game, the graphics prevented us from testing at full resolution. Even the Dell XPS 15z could not produce a result to play native resolution, but resolution bulbs 58.5fps crank means. In Lost Planet 2, the parameters of product support and 24.7fps 13.1fps at the native resolution. The Acer is a few steps behind the XPS 15z (37.1fps 12.4fps with the natives), but not beat-B1 Asus K53E (19.5fps on average, but unplayable in the original).

When the Acer beat all competitors had the battery. Measured in our MobileMark 2007 benchmark, the six-cell battery 90Wh Acer lasted 9 hours 57 minutes. This all-day power cables for 15-inch container, bypassing the 6:26 and Asus K53E-B1, and also leaving the leaves of Acer Lenovo IdeaPad (4:41, 48Wh) and Dell (3:53, 64Wh) and dust.

With a price of $ 800 and a combination of beauty and intelligence, Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 is a smart buy for any budget. Its powerful processor, switchable graphics, and battery life of nearly 10 hours are all major assets, can compensate for the lack of features like WiDi 2.0 and wireless broadband. If these features are part-breakers for you, try Editors' Choice-1066A9U Lenovo IdeaPad V570.
