Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI Review

Effect VPC-F215FX/BI before opening the cover. While many laptops use a clamshell design, the new VAIO line of the frame is beveled edge, unlike the usual flat-front seen in other systems. These edges are dressed in beautiful glossy piano-black finish, which will probably need to be cleaned regularly to remove fingerprints. As usual, the desktop multimedia laptop, the Sony VAIO is fairly large, measuring 1.79 by 15.69 by 10.69 inches (HWD) and weighing back pain-inducing Seven Pounds.

The 16-inch 1920 x 1, 080 widescreen display uses bright colors and fine detail. In addition to its high resolution, it also has a 240Hz refresh rate so it can display more frames per second and a softer image in 3D. An integrated transmitter synchronizes active 3D glasses shutter, these programs are installed with two batteries rated to last 100 hours, but you'll pay $ 4.99 each to replace the drain. The display is coupled with Sony S-Force Front Surround 3D to simulate impressive five-channel surround sound, which combined with Dolby Home Theater sound system.

Sony VAIO also features a Chiclet keyboard with backlight, with balls square matte finish that looks great against the shiny black frame. The presentation is something beyond the ordinary, but the keys are well spaced, and the writing experience is pleasant. The wrist is raised slightly and pull the same matte finish as the keys which is unusual, but prevents a lot of ugly handprint. Integrated into the palm rest is a multitouch trackpad, which, like the previous models in the VAIO line features a textured pattern consisting of raised dots. These can sometimes be intrusive, but VPC-F215FX/BI keep a low profile. The touchpad multitouch gesture recorded no false negatives, but not all my actions were understood as I have used. Click buttons left and right slowly, and the unified toolbar is one of the few I've used that does not let me separate the left and right buttons.

Performance

Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI a display is not only pretty, with lots of entertainment features. Its heart is a 2GHz Intel Core i7 2630QM quad-core processor, which is combined with 6 GB of memory provides plenty of power for each program you want to throw. When we did our entire test system benchmark, PCMark Vantage, Sony Vaio scored in 8701, easily beating the 8211 and Choice Editors' Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 ($ 1,499.99 Street, 4 stars) in 6276 and the HP Envy 17 3D. We have seen the same level of performance in our Cinebench R11.5 makes the test with the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI scored 5.07, edging past the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 (4.96), and jump over the HP Envy 17 3D (2.95) the first-generation Core i7.

Sony also added to the mix a 540M Nvidia GeForce GT graphics processor with a cache of 1 GB of total memory. It also includes NVIDIA Optimus, which automatically switches between integrated and discrete graphics Intel GPU more power when needed. In our test of 3DMark 06 with DirectX 9, 5673 marked the Sony VAIO in 1024 by 768, and when the resolution setting increased to a total of 1,080 in 1920, the score dropped to 2257. We have seen similar results in the actual games, like Crysis, where the Sony 28 frames per second (fps) at 1024 by 768 and 3 fps with full and Lost Planet 2, we saw a speed of 16, 6 fps at lower resolution and 5.2fps at the highest level. The Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 established higher frame rates in both Crysis (48.4fps), and Lost Planet 2 (47.7fps), and HP 3D Envy 17 did even better (68.3fps in Crysis, 71.2 FPS Lost Planet 2).

We tested the Sony 3D enabled, turn it off and you feel even better frame rates, even if your Acer and HP even faster.

The Sony VAIO offers even more raw power than competing systems, however, especially when it comes to multimedia. In our tests Photoshop CS5, the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI completed 12 tasks for manipulating images in 4 minutes and 11 seconds, ahead of all similar systems, with the exception of the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 (03: 52). In our video encoding test parking brake, the angle of Sony over 1 minute 40 seconds, beating all competitors, including the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 (02:08) and Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) ($ direct 1039.98, 4 stars) (2, 39).

These components provide a solid performance, but they are battery hungry as well, and our MobileMark 2007 battery test, the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI lasted 2 hours 36 minutes and its six-cell battery 54Wh. The juice is not quite enough to get you through a long movie, but it's a full hour longer than a mere 1:39, and the HP Envy 17 3D. Systems with longer battery life are handled much larger batteries, such as the Dell Inspiron 17R (90Wh, 7:51) or the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 (87Wh, 5:22). Regardless of the size of the battery, you still want the Sony VAIO VPC-F215FX/BI near a power outlet.
