Design and build
Acer Aspire Timeline X-Series is the latest generation of thin and light notebooks from Acer designed to deliver a solid performance and long battery life in a surprisingly light package. At first glance, it is easy to confuse one for the Aspire 1830T dozens of Acer netbooks, have proved in recent years. Looks, however, can deceive.
Build quality is quite good despite the small size of this laptop. The combination of matte black plastic and relatively thick brushed aluminum palmrests leave the laptop feels solid and shows almost no signs of flexibility. The screen is closed with a good amount of excitation of the display hinges when closed. Protection against the screen lid is adequate cover folds easily and distortions appear on the screen when applying pressure on the back cover. The opening of the screen, you can tell the hinges should stop for a long period of high tension that prevents the screen from flopping around after it opened. The body of the laptop seems to be well designed with minimal chassis flex and no obvious cracks from plastic.
One area of design for me was a laptop on the bottom. Expansion bay offers access to the hard drive, WiFi, optional WWAN card slots and two RAM sockets. One of the cover plate is supported by five screws (my only complaint), then you should spend a minute or two to lose all the screws before you can replace the hard drive or add more memory. That said, I am always happy to see when the producers make it easy for owners to update the memory books.
